As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

Pay per click (PPC) or Pay to click (PTC), also called cost per click, is an internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, in which advertisers pay the publisher (typically a website owner) when the advert is clicked. Advertisers are charged on the basis of either flat rates/bid based rates.

The issue of pay per click in Shariah falls under the concept of Ijarah (hiring) since the publisher/website owner receives a fee for a service provided. Therefore all the rules and laws of Ijarah will be applicable to such a transaction. According to Shariah, the Ujrah (fee) and the Manfa’ah (service benefit) must be specified and determined. For example, Zaid agrees to repair Bakr’s mobile phone according to fixed specifications in exchange of R 500.

There are various models and concepts of pay per click or per to click. The permissibility of Pay per click or pay to click is based on the actual model, payment plan and terms and conditions of the contract.
