Conditions for Validity of Jumu’ah

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) The area in which I work has no mosques and the company for which I work employees very few Muslims. For this reason I am having problems praying my Jumu’ah.

Can you please advise me as to what to do. The closest mosque is a few miles away (20 miles); if I were to go there I would not make it back in time. My lunch break is only one hour.

A.) In order for Jumu’ah to be valid, it is not necessary that it be performed in a Masjid. The condition for the validity of the Jumu’ah is that it must be a town or city and there must be at least three adult Muslim males besides the Imam.

If the area of your work is a town or city, we suggest you and the other Muslim employees perform Jumu’ah at the workplace or in a nearby venue. You may discuss that with your administration or alternatively rent a place nearby every Friday to perform Jumu’ah there.
