Fantasy Cricket League

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) Just wanted to ask a quick question with regards to participating in a fantasy cricket league, which involves selecting a cricket team consisting of all the players from the current world teams. For this the participant does not have to pay to enter, however he will win a prize at the end if his chosen players do well. Could you please tell me if this is permissible, and not any form of gambling. [Faisal bin Munir]

A.) In principle, participating in a fantasy cricket league is an absolute waste of time and resources, hence, not permissible.

If you participate in this program, it is an accepted fact that you will be keeping an update of every match which will result in you becoming unmindful of your Shar’ee obligations. Though this type of participation does not fall under the category of gambling, it is not permissible to participate in this venture. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
