Tahajjud Prayer: Listening to recorded recitation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I heard that it is preferred to read long surah’s for the tahajjud prayer. It is permissible for me to play audio of a recorded surah by an imam during the prayer and then stop and play again as I finished going into sujood or is this bidaah?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

It is obligatory to recite the Qur’an by oneself when praying alone or leading others. It is not sufficient to listen to a recording of the Qur’an, because prayer is a specific act of worship whose actions were specifically commanded by Allah and regarding which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Pray as you see me pray.” [Bukhari]

Doing what you suggest would be invalid and sinful. Rather, you should:

1. Pray by reciting the Qur’an you have memorized;

2. Recite Qur’an at night or listen to it, as this too has great virtue; and

3. Take this as an incentive to memorize more Qur’an.

And Allah alone gives success.

Faraz Rabbani
