What is the ruling for men of dragging one’s garment?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

There is some detail about dragging one’s garment below the ankles for men. If his intention is arrogance and conceit, it is haram, but if it is not, then it is merely makruh, not haram. The permissibility lies in that the garment not extend beyond the ankles and the sunna is that the hem of the garment be at the middle of the calves. This is the reliable position of our school and our imams have gathered hadiths about this. A prohibition about dragging one’s garment has been confirmed in a rigorously authenticated hadith, and its restriction to doing so with conceit has also been established.

Imam al-Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim,

“The praiseworthy [s. way to keep the hem] is at the middle of the calves and the permissible, without any dislike is to wear it under that, until the ankles, and whatever extends beyond the ankles is prohibited. If it is done with conceit, it is prohibitively interdicted, whereas if it is not [with conceit], then it is somewhat disliked (tanzihan).

As for the hadith that have come saying that whatever is past the ankles is in the fire, the intended meaning by it is the conceit, because these texts are unconditioned and are thus qualified by the conditioned texts. And Allah knows best”
