Praying Jumu`ah on the 8th of Dhu l-Hijjah

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

As the 8th of Dhul Hijjah may fall on Friday, should one perform Friday prayer before going to Mina?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

As Imam Nawawi mentions in his book on hajj, al-Idah, and Ibn Hajar in his hashiyah on it, if on the 8th, you are a traveler*, you are not obligated to pray the Friday (Jumu`ah) prayer. But if you are a resident, then you must pray it, and you would be sinful if you left Mecca after dawn to where you could not pray it. The solution, as Imam Nawawi mentions, is to leave the city limits of Mecca and head to Mina before dawn. And Allah knows best.
