Is it an innovation to use prayer beads?

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Can any one provide me with the proofs for using the tasbih/dhikr beads/sibha. I have had proofs and lent them to a brother in jail now we have lost touch. I make them for people and if this is an innovation then I will leave it.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah’s blessings and peace be on His Messenger Muhammad, and his folk, companions, and followers.

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Please go to www.SunniPath.com, and search for prayer beads. There are a number of answers. Prayer beads are in themselves permitted, and praiseworthy when used for the good, according to the overwhelming majority of Islamic scholarship. [Suyuti, al-Hawi lil Fatawi; Lakhnawi’s Risala on prayer beads; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

To understand why they aren’t a blameworthy innovation (bid`a sayyi’a), one must first understand what the sound understanding of innovation itself is. Please go to www.SunniPath.com, and search for innovation, for a number of answers.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
