Wudu, fasting and discharge

Answered as per Shafi'i Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

I read on your site about how a woman can try to keep her wudu intact for a long time by inserting something insider of her to block discharge from exiting. But what to do when she is fasting? Can that be done while fasting?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

One may not insert anything intentionally and remembering that they are fasting in their private parts when they are fasting, for this would invalidate the fast. Rather, if a woman sees that clear or white discharge has exited from her, she should renew her wudu.

If she has constant discharge, such that she cannot find anytime within the prayer time to make wudu and pray without it exiting, or that she is able to find such time but she does not know when this would occur, then she is excused and may pray in a state of abnormal uterine bleeding (istihada). There are specific rulings regarding the intention that she must make during her wudu and steps about her purification that can be found on our site.

Please refer to the following article about how to purify oneself and pray while in this state.

When is a person considered to be in a state of chronic annulment of ablution?

And Allah knows best.
