Silence Between Eid Prayer and Eid Khutbah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ZamzamAcademy.com

Sheikh, about ahkam salaatul ‘Eid..is it also wajib to remain silent during the transitional period from the end of the ‘eid salaah to the start of the khutba?

Assalamu alaykum

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious Most Merciful

It is not permitted to engage in conversation during the Khutba of ‘Id, just as it is not permissible during the Friday sermon. The same is the ruling for the transition period between the salat and sermon.

However, there is a slight difference of opinion among the Hanafi Imams concerning talking about the hereafter. According Imam Abu Yusuf, it becomes prohibited to speak and pray as soon as the Imam appears for the sermon and prayer; and according to Imam Abu Hanifa and Muhammad, it becomes prohibited to pray as soon as he appears and prohibited to speak after he begins to deliver his sermon. (Radd al-Muhtar ala ‘l-Durr al-Mukhtar 1:551)

As stated before, this difference of opinion is only concerning speaking on the hereafter. However, it is best to abstain from all talk during this time as it is more in line with the hadith on prohibition and the more cautionary practice.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam Mufti Abdurrahman ibn Yusuf
