Will Giving Money to the Mosque Discharge the Obligation to Slaughter an Animal?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Salman Younas

Question: Can someone donate his/her Qurbani money to help build a new mosque?

Answer: wa `alaykum assalam

No, one cannot give the money used towards a qurbani (slaughtering) to the mosque. This will not discharge an individuals obligation to actually slaughter an animal. This obligation has been established in the primary texts of the Qur’an and hadith and therefore must be carried out in the form prescribed in order for the obligation to be fulfilled.

You may, of course, give the skin of the slaughtered animal to the mosque who may then sell it.
