The Ruling on Delaying or Forgetting the Prostration of Recital

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Question: Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Insha’Allah you are in the best of health and Iman.

1. In the Hanafi school, can you delay the prostration of recital once reciting it?

2. If you did delay, then forgot and remembered the next day or even later, do we still make the prostration of recital?

3. Is it a fard, wajib or Sunnah act?

Jazakallah khayr.

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

According to the Hanafi school, it is necessary (wajib) to perform the prostration of recital (sajdat al-tilawah). However, it is not necessary to do so immediately; therefore, it is permitted to delay it.

If one has an excuse, there would be no dislike in delaying the prostration. On the other hand, if one did not have an excuse, it would be disliked to delay it.

Operationally, one should try to perform the prostration as soon as possible. In the case that one did in fact forget, it would remain necessary (wajib) to perform it; thus, one would do so upon remembering.

And Allah knows best.
