The Limits of Washing the Hair of the Face in Wudu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: In wudu, is it necessary to wash hair that falls outside the boundaries of the face, like if your beard falls 4 inches below your chin?

Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

No, it is not obligatory to wash the hair that goes beyond the limit of the face.

Rather, it is obligatory to wash the hair corresponding to the face. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

The area under the chin is not considered from the face; therefore it is not obligatory to wash.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
