Question: I have heard that the Prophet mentioned in a Hadith that two sects (the Murjiyah and the Qadariyah) do not have any share in Islam due to their corrupt beliefs. Could you clarify?
Answer: assalamu alaykum
The hadith that you are referring to states, “Two groups from my community have no share in Islam: the Murjiya and Qadariya.” This was narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Maja, and Ibn Abi Asim in their respective sunan collections, among others.
Scholars differed on the grading of this hadith with some stating it was authentic (hasan) while others that it was weak (da’if) or even forged (mawdu). The correct position seems to be its being weak at the least.
If authentic, this hadith does not mean those who ascribe to the beliefs of the Murjiya and Qadariya are outside the fold of Islam. Rather, it refers to a deficiency in their Islam due to certain heterodox positions they held. As Ibn Hajar and others make clear, the unsound interpretations such groups concluded was not out a desire to commit disbelief but an attempt to attain the truth. In doing so, these groups went beyond the limits of acceptable interpretation and for this reason were deemed innovators.
