Can I Wish to Become Omnipotent If I Go to Paradise?

Question: Assalam alaykum,

In the Quran there are verses that suggest that you can do anything you want in Paradise. Then, is it also possible to wish to become almighty/omnipotent in Paradise or similiar things that would be considered problematic?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

No, becoming “almighty” is rationally impossible– in this life and the next. [see also: The Necessary Attributes of God and the Logical Absurdity of Infinite Regression]

Allah Most High says, “They will enter perpetual Gardens graced with flowing streams. There they will have everything they wish. This is the way God rewards the righteous” [16.31], “they will have everything they wish for with their Lord. Such is the reward of those who do good” [39.34] and there are many other similar verses.

They’ll get everything their souls desire and their eyes delight in, but, as Shaykh `Ali Hani clarified, the people of Paradise won’t desire foul things. This is understood from other verses and traditions which mention how they will be purified from evil thoughts and desires to do the unlawful (haram).

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “When the believers are saved from the Fire, they will be made to stop at a bridge between the Garden and the Fire where they will inflict retaliation from one another for the injustices which arose between them on this world until they are purified and purged. Then they will be given permission to enter the Garden. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, one of you will recognise his dwelling in the Garden better than he recognises his dwelling in this world.” [Bukhari]

And Allah alone knows best.
