Question: Assalam alaykum,

If a person has broken fasts of ramadhan over several years due to eating or sexual intercouse and he now would like to expiate for the multiple offences occured, how much fasts would he have to keep to expiate?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

You need to make up (qada’) of all the fasts you deliberately nullified, without excuse, and perform one expiation (kaffara). [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

The expiation is to fast sixty consecutive days which do not include (1) Eid al-Fitr, (2) Eid al-Adha, or (3) the three days thereafter.

You also need to repent for breaking those fasts. See: A Reader on Tawba (Repentance)

And see: How Many Expiations Are Required For Multiple Broken Fasts?

And Allah alone knows best.

في مراقي الفلاح: ( صام شهرين متتابعين ليس فيها يوم عيد ولا ) بعض ( أيام التشريق ) للنهي عن صيامها

wassalam,
