Are the Sins of the Progeny of the Messenger of Allah Forgiven?

Question: Salam,

Is it true that the explanation of the second verse of surah Al Fath means that the sins of the progeny of Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) are forgiven?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

No, the verse is not in reference to the family of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), as Shaykh `Ali Hani clarified.

Allah Most High says, “Truly We have opened up a path to clear triumph for you [Prophet], so that God may forgive you your past and future sins, complete His grace upon you, guide you to a straight path” [48.1-2]

The ‘sins’ being referred to are those actions that turned out to be the sub-optimal response to the situation; and they were referred to as ‘sins’ considering his tremendous station. [Abu al-Su`ud, Irshad al-`Aql al-Salim]

Otherwise, we believe that Prophets do not sin, as the theologians clearly state.

See: How Are the Prophets Protected from Error and Sin? and: Are the Prophets Protected from Sin?

And Allah alone gives success.

wassalam,
