How to Translate Tamattu’ And Qiran?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Seekersguidance.org

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: Assalamu alaykum,

How to translate Tamattu’? And what is Qiran?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.

(1) Tamattu` is linguistically benefiting; and technically combining between the actions of the lesser pilgrimage (`umra) and the greater pilgrimage (hajj) in the months of Hajj, in a single year, with two states of pilgrim sanctity (ihram), by performing the `umra first, and without returning to one’s family between the `umra and hajj [i.e. without ihram].

(2) Qiran is linguistically combining between two things; and technically combining between `umra and hajj in a single ihram, and in one journey.

And Allah alone gives success.

wassalam,
