Is It permissible to Run an Internet Cafe?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Considering that Internet cafés are being used for wrong things, will we have to face Allah’s punishment for running an Internet café? Will we be held responsible for misuse?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the name of Allah, the inspirer of truth. All praise is to Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate, and all blessings and peace to our Master Muhammad, his family, companions, and those who follow them.

The service provided by an Internet café to its customers, which is access to the Internet for a specified rate, is halal.

After this, if the customer uses this service for matters that are impermissible, it is their fault, and the service provider (such as the Internet café) is not sinful for this.

However, one should remember the Prophet’s guidance (Allah bless him & give him peace) that, “Whoever among you sees a wrong, let them change it by their hand; if they cannot, then let them change it with their their tongue; and if they cannot, then in their heart, and this is the least of faith.” [Muslim]

As such, one should take the reasonable precautious to avoid that which is clearly impermissible (such as pornography) from being accessed at one’s internet café.

Allah Almighty knows best.

Walaikum assalam,
Faraz Rabbani .
