Urgent Question: Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Thursday night, before I went to sleep, everyone was saying that Ramadan would begin on Saturday because the moon was not sighted. When I went for fajr salah today (Friday) at the community musalla, the people there said Ramadan would begin on Saturday. I had my breakfast right after my salah. Now I have been told that Ramadan has started today (Friday)! This is what the city’s Masajid agreed upon late last night (Thursday), so the brothers at the musalla did not give me the correct information. I have not eaten anything since my breakfast….can I still fast the rest of the day as a valid fast, or what should I do?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

As for the intention in fasting, you can make the intention to fast anytime until the Islamic mid-day, which is half-way between the time fajr comes in and when maghrib comes in. [Around an hour before Zuhr.] An intention may be made any time from Maghrib of the night before, and remains valid as long as you did not resolve NOT to fast.

Note, however, that an “intention” [go back and read the posting on Intention] is “a firm resolve to perform an act of worship,” and, as such, it is rarely conceivable that a Muslim NOT have an intention in Ramadan, the scholars tell us. And even the intention to get up for Suhur is considered sufficient for validity.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam,

Faraz
