Signs of reaching puberty in males

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Sidi Fadi Qutub Zada

What is ejaculation as understood by the Hanafi scholars?  i.e. Is it merely the exiting of semen from the male private part or is it exiting with desire/orgasm? When this “first ejaculation” (i.e. the one that makes one baaligh between 12-15 lunar years) takes place, does it have to accompany orgasm (in order to make one baaligh) or does it simply have to leak/spurt out (without orgasm) to make one baaligh? I hope this is clear. – How does one distinguish between pre-seminal fluid (madhy) and semen (maniy)? Does/Can madhy exit with desire/orgasm?

Ejaculation is the sudden or spontaneous discharging of semen in orgasm; this necessitates bathing (ghusl). Ejaculation that is not in orgasm necessitates bathing as well except in rare cases, such as when discharging from a hit to the body, or when carrying a heavy load. [Hashiyat Ibn Abidin 1:108]

When this “first ejaculation” (i.e. the one that makes one baaligh between 12-15 lunar years) takes place, does it have to accompany orgasm (in order to make one baaligh) or does it simply have to leak/spurt out (without orgasm) to make one baaligh? I hope this is clear.

It is not a condition for orgasm to accompany the first ejaculation; rather one becomes legally mature (baaligh) simply by the exiting of the semen from the male private part (i.e. with or without desire).

How does one distinguish between pre-seminal fluid (madhy) and semen (maniy)? Does/Can madhy exit with desire/orgasm?

Semen is a whitish secretion that gushes out from the penis (normally in orgasm) causing it to slacken and reduce in size, whereas pre-seminal fluid (madhy) is a clear secretion that exits the penis when experiencing desire in small quantities without gushing out, and is more common in women than men. [Tahtawi 1:144,150 Maktabat al-Ilm al-Hadith}

Note: After one ejaculates, it is recommended for him to urinate, or to sleep, or to walk a lot before taking a bath (ghusl). If one sees semen after doing one of these three things and after bathing, it will not be necessary for one to take another bath, and one must make ablution (wudu’) only. [Tahtawi 1:145-146]
