Receiving free services: Is one responsible for informing the provider, even after closing the

Two companies are partners. One provides Internet services, and the other provides access to the Internet. If a brother unsubscribed from his broadband (hi-speed) access provider, returned the modem, and is informed that he owes nothing and that his account is now closed, and then returns home to discover that he is able to obtain free dial-up access as before, is he responsible according to the Shariah for notifying the access provider, who is responsible for billing, that they have not effectively closed his account to the full extent, and that he is still making use of the Internet services provided by its partner company? He has already informed the Internet services provider but their representative did not take any action, and seemed somewhat surprised that the brother was calling to make this report considering that he was getting the services for free.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

wa alaikum salaam,

Yes, he is responsible by Shariah to notify the access provider. The representative does not own the company. Waving the charge is not within his power.

And Allah knows best.
