Verily, the religion is ease… dealing with wudu woes

I have some skin cracks (like little agnail) around my nails, and it’s always a problem to wash them: by just pouring water, I’m not sure all my skin will get that, but by rubbing every bit of skin with fingers – it’s too long. Also near the roots of nails there are some “small nails”: the problem is that they are not tightly fastened to my nails – that has appeared recently (because I touched them too often): by just pouring water, I’m absolutely unsure that the area under these nails will get wet (because it’s something like agnail, I think that I should wet the area under these “little nails” also), what should I do?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

Imam Abdullah ibn ‘Alawi al-Haddad says in his aphorisms,

Going too far in something is a sign that one will end up falling short in it. (al-hikam, 33, Dar ibn Hazm)

Acts of worship are meant to be spiritually uplifting experiences through which the slave draws near to Allah. The anguish which one feels going through difficulties such as those described in the question is opposed to this.

One must relax and use one’s common sense. Water by its nature flows so the assumption is that if poured over any part of one’s skin and gently rubbed, it will reach everywhere, even if the skin is cracked. If one has some form of cracks on ones skin one should gently rub the surface of the skin as one is washing it and that will suffice. Lifting up one’s agnails and trying to separate the ‘little nails’ will only increase the problem that one has by making such things a permanent problem as it will encourage cracks to get deeper, more flaps of skin to grow around the nail and result in the formation of more ‘little nails’. Rather if one leaves them be they will be cured over time insha’Allah.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,

‘Verily the religion is ease, and none shall make the religion hard except that it will defeat him. So be moderate, do as best you can, be of good cheer, and seek help in the mornings, the afternoons and something of the night.’ (Bukhari, 1.16:39)

We ask Allah Most High to show us the way of moderation in the footsteps of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give peace).
