Gift: can it be forwarded to others?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

If someone gives you a present can you then give it to someone else as a present?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum

Giving something as a present to somebody is legally a means for transfer of ownership from one person to another. Once somebody gifts something to somebody and that somebody takes possession of it, it is now his property to dispose of as he wishes. He may sell it or gift it to somebody else.

However, the adab of Islam encourages one to bear in mind the feelings of others. Some people feel hurt if they find somebody giving away a present that they had previously gifted to them as it might indicate to them that the person does not think much of the present. If this is the case then it may be superior to hold on to the present in accordance with the hadith, ‘None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself’.

And Allah knows best.
