Nail Varnish & Wudu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

My mother wanted to know if it was permissible for her to wear nail varnish and whether this would affect her wudu. She asked if it was ok for her to do wudu first and then apply her nail polish- as the nail polish creates a hard layer on the surface on the nail, this would mean when she did wudu again- the water will not reach the top of her nails, is this allowed?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

Using nail polish is a problem on several counts: because it prevents water from getting to the surface of the nails, one’s wudu would not be valid with it.

Also, it is from the adornment that a woman cannot display in front of men who are not from her immediate family.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
