Convert or revert?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

There has been a tendency in recent times to use the term “revert” when referring to those people who have converted to Islam. I would like to know if this is a correct term to use as it implies that people are born Muslim. How is this the case

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

The essential state of human beings, their fitra, is one of submission (Islam) to their Creator, Allah.

However, this is at the essential nor legal level. At the latter, a person is considered to be on the religion of their parents, by default, until adulthood.

As for which term is best, this is a matter of usage and preference.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
