Missed prayers in congregation?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Am I allowed to make up my qada prayers in a congregation? I wanted to ask if you are allowed to pray Qada prayer after witr prayer? That’s what I do to pray my missed isha.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

It is not normally permitted nor valid to perform makeup prayers in congregation, because:

a) one is obligated to conceal one’s sins; and

b) it is a condition for praying in congregation that one intend the same obligatory prayer as the imam [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

(i.e. very same prayer, so if the imam is praying a current Zuhr prayer, it would be invalid to pray a makeup Zuhr prayer behind him; if the imam is praying a makeup of Zuhr, then one would have to be making up the very same day’s missed prayer—rare indeed).
