Friday Prayer for the Constant Traveler

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Abu Usamah

I have a friend who travels approx 50 miles away from his home to get to work (100 miles return trip).  He has asked me whether he needs to perform the Friday Jumah Prayer as he is considered a Traveler.  Since this is a regular occurrence this will mean that he will miss more than 3 consecutive Jumahs.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Al-Salam `alaykum

Since your friend is travelling more than 77km* he is considered a musafir legal traveller. Thus Jumu`ah Salah will not be binding upon him and he will be allowed to offer Zhur instead. However if he is able to comfortably offer the Jumu`ah it is better for him not to miss this important weekly congregatory prayer.

*Ensure that this is the distance or more from the border of his town to the border of the town he is travelling towards. This is important. If the distance between the 2 borders is less than this then he will not be a musafir.

Also remember that if this distance is within one city then he will not be a musafir.
