Is it sunnah to pray the confirmed sunnah prayers that come after the obligatory prayers, at the mosque or at home?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

It is generally best to perform non-obligatory prayers at home, and for men to perform the obligatory prayers in the mosque. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

It is disliked to separate between the obligatory prayer and the sunnas that come after them with any worldly talk or activity (besides what it takes to get home), and doing so reduces the reward of the sunna.

Thus, if one wishes to perform the sunnas at home, one should not engage in such activity—such as entering into a conversation with others or shopping on the way. It is fine to greet others—the scholars mention that this and the quick ‘small talk’ that is from basic social propriety does not reduce the reward. However, if one fears engaging in such worldly actions, then it is best to perform the sunnas in the mosque.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
