Hajj and leaving Makkah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Sohail Hanif, SunniPath Academy Teacher

Could you please clarify for me from the Hanafi perspective. My Hajj organisers are taking us to Madina after performing an initial Umrah at arrival in Makkah. When we return to Makkah for Hajj they plan to take us to Mina straight away. Is the Hanafi view that you would have to perform an Umrah prior to proceeding to Mina?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaykum
What one’s Hajj group intends to do is absolutely fine in the Hanafi school.  This is called Hajj Tamattu’.  One first goes to Makka with the intention of Umra only.  After completing the Umra one leaves one’s state of ihram.  When the days of Hajj draw near, one re-enters ihram with the intention of Hajj only and performs the rites of Hajj.  The fact that one is going to Madina in between does not affect the status of one’s Hajj as Hajj tamattu’.  One is obliged to perform a sacrifice on the day of Eid or the two days after it.
