When does Fajr prayer count as a missed prayer?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

My question is at what time does Fajr fall into the Qadha time. Is the time of fajr from before sunrise to dhuhr or from before sunrise to sunrise? Because if by my own weakness I sleep in and wake up an hour after sunrise and wish to pray fajr, should I be praying with a qadha intention.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

When Fajr time goes out (with sunrise, when any part of the sun’s orb appears on the actual horizon), then one has missed the time for Fajr prayer, and one’s performance will be a makeup (qada’).

One is obliged to take the means to perform each prayer in its time, and also obliged to avoid anything that prevents one from being able to perform each prayer in its time.
