Purchasing stolen Items

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Is it permissible to purchase an item that I suspect may be stolen goods, though not 100% certain? And does it matter what percent of certainty I have about the goods being stolen. i.e. A person selling a $300 electronic device on the street corner for $20. Would it be ok to purchase this item?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

It is haram to purchase something you know to be stolen, and scrupulousness to avoid purchasing something that there is reason to suspect might be stolen.
