The call to commence (iqama)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

My Question is regarding the Iqama before the beginning of the prayer. When praying behind an Imam, is it a necessary act that needs to be performed or can one pray (start by the imam straight away jumping onto takbeer) without it? and regarding the Friday prayer, is it a have to (the Iqama), because today the prayer  was done without it, which shook me.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

The call to commence (iqama), like the call to prayer (adhan) is a very strongly emphasized sunna for congregational prayers, and also for men when praying alone. [Ala al-Din Abidin, al-Hadiyya]
