Ghusl in Braided Hair

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

What are the minimum requirements for washing your hair during ghusl after intercourse? I have read that you don’t need to unbraid or untie your hair in ghusl. Is pouring a handful of water over your hair sufficient? Please explain.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Wa Alaykum Assalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu,

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful & Compassionate

From Sidi Faraz’s forthcoming book, The Essentials of Hanafi Fiqh:

“It is not necessary for a woman to undo her braids or ensure that water reaches all of her braided hair as long as it reaches the roots of her hair on her head.”

Thus, the rules for ghusl are the same in this case – water must reach the roots of your hair, if this is accomplished ghusl is valid.

Wassalam,
