Is it true that a man should marry a less educated or less intelligent woman?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Salaams! I am in a bit of a dilemma. Someone gave some advice (and said that this was the islamic perspective too) that when looking for a female marriage partner, you should try to make sure that the girl is less educated or less intelligent than the male (myself). Alhamdu lillaah I have quite good knowledge of Islam including Fiqh A’qaaid, seerah, hadith etc. But my potential marriage partner is an ‘Aalimah. Is it not worth me seeing her for marriage? Is the brothers advice true? jazakallaah

Answer
Answer:

In the name of Allah the Creator

The advice of the person in question is not true. When searching for a marriage partner we are advised to look Deen in the noble Ahadith:

Narrated by Abu Huraira: Rasulullah Sallalahu Alaihe Wassalam said, ? A woman is married for four (things) i.e, her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. So you should take possession of (marry) the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a loser?.(Bukhari, Kitabun Nikah)

The Aalimah will Inshallah have a strong roots in Islam. You should go and see her, what ever Allah wishes will happen. Each person is gifted in different ways and at this point in time you should not think to yourself that she is more educated than you, or that you are less educated, we all have qualities which the other wont have.

Shariah teaches that you should look for ?Kafaa?at? (compatibility) in the potential marriage partner. Just because she is an Aalimah does not mean that you will not be compatible. Many Aalimahs marry non alims and are happy and content together because they have the same interests, hobbies and outlook in life etc.

It is worth while for you to go and see her for marriage. Inshallah may Allah make your task easy for you, Ameen.

And Allah Taala knows best.
