Postpartum Napaak: Does Bleeding Duration Determine the 40-Day Rule?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have heard that a woman is napaak for 40 days after baby birth. What if bleeding stops after 3 weeks? Is she still supposed to be napaak for 40days?

Bismillaah

A: The maximum period of nifaas (post natal bleeding) is forty days. However if the bleeding stops before forty days, a woman should make ghusal and commence performing Salaah. It should be borne in mind that if the bleeding recommences before the passing of forty days, then the entire period (i.e. the period the blood recommenced as well as the period the woman did not see blood) will be regarded as nifaas.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
