Dowry in Islam: Permissible or Prohibited?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is demanding dowry haraam, makrooh or permissible in Islam? Is giving dowry to a daughter’s husband also in the same category?

Bismillaah

A: It is a compulsory right of the wife. Since it is her right she has all the right to demand. The dowry (mahr) is to be given to the wife. The husband is not entitled to any type of dowry. For the husband to make a demand is haraam.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
