Is the use of Taweez prohibited in Islam?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Please can you assist me. One of my wife’s friends came to visit her and saw a Taweez on my son. She commented and said that the use of Taweez is Haraam and something to the effect that a person who wears a Taweez will not enter Jannah. She mentioned that this is a hadith in an authentic kitaab. I find this strange as my ustaadh wrote the taweez for my son for nazar. She has subsequently sent a you tube video of some Aalim (I suspect he is an Aalim) quoting a hadith saying that the sahaaba frowned upon the use and gave 3 reasons why he considers it to be prohibited. My first point was to trace the Haadith but he only gave the haadith number (23457) and not the kitaab in which it comes from. So with my limited knowledge it was difficult to find. Please can you advise me on the use of Taweez. My understanding is so long as it does not contain shirk and the belief is that it is not the Taweez but Allah who protects the use is fine.

Bismillaah
