Exploring Ajwa Dates: History and Varieties in Madina

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Can you please explain what exactly Ajwa dates are, and give a brief history on it? Also, are all the dates in Madina referred to as Ajwa Dates?

Bismillaah

A: Ajwa is a specific type of date. The ajwa dates of Madinah Munawwarah have been blessed with special benefits that are explained in the mubaarak Ahaadith of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said that the one who eats seven ajwa dates in the morning on an empty stomach will not be affected by black magic or poison for that day. There are various types of dates found in Madinah Munawwarah and the Ajwa date is one type from among them.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
