Sitting on a chair and reciting Qur’an

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Increasingly persons with little or no pain in the legs are sitting on comfortable sofas at home and on chairs in the Musjid reciting Qur’an as they would read a newspaper. Their excuse being it’s not a sin. Is it? How should one sit when reciting Qur’an? What naseehah can be offered to relatives and friends who see no problem sitting on a chair, sometimes with legs stretched out, reciting Qur’an?

Bismillaah

A: In the musjid, it is not recommended to be sitting on the chair without a very valid reason. At home, one may sit on a chair or on the ground.

The greater the adab the greater the merit and reward. Allah Ta`ala appreciates adab and mahabbat.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
