Performing Salaah at sunset

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I want to know that can a person offer any Salaah during zawaal time in the evening? I had heard some Mufti saying that the particular day’s asr can be offered. What is the time for zawaal before maghrib?

Bismillaah

A: The time before sunset is not called zawaal. Zawaal is the time when the sun is at it’s zenith (it’s halfway mark between sunrise and sunset). During this time it is impermissible for one to perform any Salaah. Similarly it is impermissible for one to perform any nafil Salaah after performing the fardh of asr till sunset. It is permissible for one to perform qadha Salaah after asr. One should refrain from performing qadha salaah before sunset from the time the colour of the sun changes (as a precaution approximately 10 minutes before sunset). In this time one should not perform any nafil Salaah, nor any qadha Salaah. However if one had not performed the asr of that day, it will be permissible for him to perform the fardh of asr of that day in this time.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
