Making a vow to sit for I’tikaaf

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: When performing Nadhr of I’tikaf (for a vow), what is the minimum time period? Does it have to start at Maghrib or can one day be counted from eg. 10 in the morning to the next day at 10?

Bismillaah

A: If one had made a nazar that one will make i’tikaaf for one day, then the i’tikaaf will commence from sunset till the following day sunset. One will also have to fast for the entire day. In the case of a man, he will have to spend the i’tikaaf in the Musjid. In the case of a lady, she should allocate a room or section in her home and carry out the i’tikaaf.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
