Keeping a dog as a pet due to loneliness

Q: I am aware of the fact that dogs can’t be kept as pets inside the apartment (or house) because their sliva is najis. I am also aware of the fact that Islam is the most accommodating religion. I am an OCD patient and I wanted to inquire the ruling on therapy dogs for anxiety/depression inside the apartment. I live in Canada and I don’t have any family here to support me emotionally and therefore the anxiety kept growing until I became an OCD patient.

A: It is impermissible to keep a dog as a pet. The Hadith explains that the home wherein a dog is kept, the malaaikah do not enter such a home. We suggest that you keep another animal besides a dog as a pet in order to give you some type of comfort.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
