How is the Minimum Zakaat Nisaab Calculated?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My question is how is the zakaat ‘nisaab’ worked out. In other words how is the minimum zakaat nisaab worked out?

A: The Hadith explains that the one who possesses 200 dirhams of silver should pay 5 dirhams in zakaat (i.e. 2.5% of 200 dirhams). Hence the one who possesses zakaatable wealth to the equivalent of 200 dirhams of silver should discharge 2.5% of his wealth.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
