Kaffarah for taking an oath and speaking lies

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If I have previously in the last 5 years said (by allah) and was lying then will kaffarah be wajib? I just learned about kaffarah recently so should I repent and abstain from swearing by allah on a lie or do I have to pay the kaffarahs of the past few years which I’m not aware of how many times ocured?

A: If the qasam that you had broken was taken for something of the future then the kaffarah for each qasam is the feeding of 10 poor people, giving them clothes (that Salaah can be performed in) or giving the equivalent of fitrah to 10 poor people. If you do not know the exact number of times you had broken the qasam then make an estimation.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
