Playing chess and ludo

Q: Is it allowed to play chess ludu etc with the wife?

A: Chess is not permissible. Ludo though not haraam, but it is something to be gradually left out.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: You have written in the answer to one question that the game of ludo is not haraam though one should not do it. Whereas I heard that Rasul Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said that ,”Whoever plays with dice, it is as if he dipped his hand in the flesh and blood of a pig.” I am a bit confused. Please explain.

A: The exact Hadith you are referring to is reported in Abu Dawood Shareef. The translation is as follows: Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, The one who plays with backgammon, as though he has immersed his hands the the meat of a swine and it’s blood.
A detailed discussion appears in Awjazul Masaalik 17/162 on this subject. You may refer to it.
