Minimum amount of Qiraat for the Salaah to be valid

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I started praying magrib alone before another brother joined me, so during the second rakaat I recited only one verse from the Quran (sura ghafir verse 44) after fatiha and went to ruku position. Since then I have been having doubts if my salaah is valid or not. If not what should I do because that brother is gone now.

A: If the one verse you recited was long (i.e. thirty letters or more), then the qiraat for that rakaat is valid.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: I require the following clarification:

1. Since you mentioned thirty letters or more, how do you calculate the letters in Arabic in each Ayat of The Qur’an.

2. Some Ulema also suggest that a minimum of Three Ayats have to be read in each Rakaah for Salaah to be valid.  But, if you read Ayat ul Kursi it has more letters than the three Ayats of Surah Kauthar.  So, can we read Ayat ul Kursi alone?

Then, how do we ensure correct length of Ayat for Salaah to be valid? Please clarify in detail.

A: In the Hanafi mazhab, three small aayats or one long Aayah will suffice for the minimum qiraat. This amount has been stipulated with thirty huroof. Each letter in a word is regarded as one harf.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
