Keeping the name “Raqeeb”

Q: My son’s name is Raqeeb. He is three months old. I was recently informed by someone that it is not allowed to have one of Allah’s names without Abdu or Abdul in front. Is this true or is it just a preference? What should I do?

A: Some names of Allah Ta’ala are permissible to keep e.g. Rasheed, Aziz, Kareem, etc. Hence it is permissible for you to keep your son’s name Raqeeb. In relation to Allah Ta’ala, the name Ar-Raqeeb means the one who is all aware and sees everything everywhere all the time. In relation to man, the name Raqeeb means the one who is alert, intelligent and watchful.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
