Following one Aalim or Mufti

Q: Is it true that we should stick to one ulama group regarding fatwa or can we check others as well. Sometimes even in the same Mazhab ulama have different views on the same topic e.g women cutting her hair etc.

A: The layman is not in a position to judge between the Shar’ee proofs and weigh the academic arguments. Similarly he does not have the potential to access the mas’alah directly from the reliable authentic sources. Hence it is best for such a person to choose one qualified Aalim or Mufti who possesses taqwa and one feels is most capable in guiding him in matters of Deen. One should thereafter remain committed to his teachings. In this way one will be saved from confusion in one’s Deen.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
