Participating in mix martial arts competitions

Q: I have been practising mix martial arts for self defence reasons, but I wonder if it’s a good idea to be entered into a mix Martial arts competition, such as the UFC and to compete and to prove Muslims are not people who can be just pushed over. We have men who are capable of physically defending our selves. But this is something small to why I want to enter into Mix martial arts, I want to spread Dawah, and earn fame and recognition Insha Allah to better the cause of the Ummah and the needy and the orphans and to become a spokes person for my brothers and sisters in the realm of mix martial arts.

A: A Mu’min has been created for higher objectives and greater goals. His endeavour should constantly be aimed towards earning the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala and the rewards of the hereafter. He should not while away his time in amusement and vain activity emulating the ways of the kuffaar. While it is permissible for one to sufficiently equip himself against danger or some hostile situation (on condition the training course conforms to Shari’ah), however the primary purpose for such training is so that it may serve as a protection for oneself, one’s family, property and one’s Deen.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
