Comprehensive Dua for forgiveness

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am having thoughts about all the incorrect duas that I made. I have thoughts such as what if this is not a sin. Here are some examples: I said that I must only stare at Allah or worship Him or not get a certain bounty and maybe many more. So I do not know whether these are sins or not. So please tell me the mininum needed for forgiveness and how will I be forgiven? Please be direct and I want it all to be completely gone. And tell me the minimum needed to be completely and defnitly forgiven.

A: Don’t confuse yourself. Beg Allah Ta`ala’s forgiveness with these words: “O Allah, I beg Your forgiveness for the sins that I have done knowingly or unknowingly.” Insha-Allah, you will cover all situations. For the future, when you have a doubt then first refer to an Alim before you can embark on it. May Allah Ta`ala be pleased with you.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Q: so you are saying that:

  1. Thise incorrect duas which I said are a sin?
  2. By saying the words within inverted commas only, “O Allah, I beg Your forgiveness for the sins that I have done knowingly or unknowingly.” Will make all of those incorrect duas  forgiven as if it never happen, no matter what?

What doubts are you referring to when you say “For the future, when you have a doubt then first refer to an Alim before you can embark on it.”

When I seek Allahs forgiveness as follows “Ya Allah those incorrect duas etc, you know what I am talking about, I admit to it, I am sorry for it, I beg your forgiveness for it and I promise You Ya Allah that I will never repeat it again. And Ya Allah protect me from repeating them again.” Can I do this and will it make all those incorrect duas etc, be forgiven as if it never happened?

A: 1/2. Yes.

3. In matters of Deen that you are not clear about.

4. Insha-Allah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
